wednesday 11th october @ Brudenell, 8pm, £5

gojonnygogogogo presents:

METRONOMY… home-made squelchy casiofunk, delicate tumbling electronica, and a bit of the old oom-pah-pah. metronomy have tiny casios, snarly guitars, melodicas, saxophones, ‘ooo ooo’s, and a variety of subtle dance routines, but their indie hit ‘you could easily have me’ and general POP wonkiness reminds us a lot of DEVO. sellotape a JML push-lamp to your chest and DANCE! Metronomy have remixed Franz Ferdinand, Ladytron and Bright Eyes, but the live show is definitely something all of their own. “kraftwerk playing ska”? this will be one of the most memorable performances you’ll see this year.

reach for the sky boys lemme see those understains

Saturday September 9th! Starts at 3pm! @the Fenton, Woodhouse Lane

ERRANDER – formerly known as P>S>P, tech metal attack, on IATDE records
LUCIEN (Sweden) – punk cock rock n roll from Sweden ala Hellacopters/Gluecifer
HUMANFLY – a yorkshire thunderstorm of riffs. mega.
THE MERCURY LEAGUE – faster than a crackhead on giro day - hc punk from Sunderland. Witness the fitness.
THE DAUNTLESS ELITE – melodic sing along punk rock, in that No Idea vein, but without sounding like every band on No Idea which, let’s face it, a lot of bands do.
DEATH HAND APPROACHING – instrumental metal, sound like The Fucking Champs apparently. But I saw TFC’s last year, and I wasn’t impressed, but I did have a good pool session while they played.
JUPITER LANDER – spazzy emo. Anyone seen crying will be ejected from the venue and beaten down on the fire escape. Ex We Are Corpses/Yossarian is Drowning/4 Planes in 4 Days/Broken Access
UNICORN LOVE – have pulled out..because one of them has to go to Church. Seriously. It’s for a wedding like.
xOLIVERREEDx – drunken grind (the best sort)
IT’S BROKEN – kid dynamite six toes from Ponte
KAYAKO SAEKI – like early Therapy? ? 2nd gig

The running order will fluctuate wildly. Much like John Travolta’s acting career. Broken Arrow though, wicked film. So get there at the start.

lady fest leeds 2007 [11 Aug 2006|12:32pm]

Leeds’ Manifesta invites Yorkshire women to get creative for Ladyfest Leeds
First planning meeting at The Common Place Leeds,
from 6.45pm – 9pm, on Tuesday 15th August

Manifesta, the Leeds-based feminist collective, today announced the first of a series of planning meetings for Ladyfest Leeds, a festival that will be taking place in Spring 2007 celebrating the creative and organisational talents of women in Leeds and Yorkshire through arts and music.

“We are just starting out and this is an excellent time to get involved. This is an opportunity for Yorkshire women of all ages to show off their creativity and talents. At the same time, we are inviting organisations working with women to become actively involved - perhaps you have a women’s group that would like to contribute artwork or writing to an exhibition. We also want to extend this Ladyfest to include people of all genders and sexualities, to anyone committed to the goals of the festival,” commented Amy Brachi, one of the organisers of Leeds Ladyfest.

“At this first planning meeting on Tuesday 15th August, there will be a chance to meet and get to know each other as a new and diverse group. We’ve arranged for dinner to be provided, which will be vegan, free and delicious. After this, we will be brainstorming ideas and discussing what we want to see happen at Ladyfest Leeds and its preceding fundraising events. All the organisers involved are volunteers and all women are welcome to contribute to the festival as an organiser, performer or artist. We can offer support and some training if appropriate.”

Empowerment and self-representation through art and music will be the main themes of Leeds Ladyfest, and it is expected that there will be up to 7 nights of music and performance, as well as 4 full days of arts exhibitions, workshops and more. Since 2000, there have been over 100 Ladyfests around the world, organised mainly by women and acting as a platform for the talents of female artists and performers. DIY in ethos, any profits made at Leeds Ladyfest will go to charity.

Leading up to the festival itself, there will be a series of events exhibitions, performances and concerts, all aimed at involving individuals and groups from across Leeds who have not previously worked together. Through these events, Ladyfest aims to bring together the energy, ideas and experience of individuals, voluntary and community organisations, colleges and universities, and the statutory sector.

Further information about Ladyfest Leeds can be found at www.manifesta.co.uk/ladyfestleeds and www.myspace.com/ladyfestleeds. People interested in finding out more about Ladyfest or who would like to discuss anything before the meeting can contact ladyfestleeds@riseup.net or 0113 29 39 679.

SUCK ME LEFT UN [28 Jul 2006|03:20pm]

daresbalat
FRIDAY 28th JULY
SUCK MY LEFT ONE
10pm - 3am
SOUL CIRCUS 159 Lower Briggate, LEEDS, LS1 6LY
THREE QUID IN

It’s the new Manifesta club night, borne of Pussy Whipped and Razzmatazz, and it’s swift becoming legendary. We’ve expanded into two rooms, so now there’s a soothing peaceful flipside in the smaller bar to the sweaty craziness upstairs.

We are the bored scene agitators, DIY feminist/queer cultural activists, zine-devotees, ladyfesters, radical knitters, faithful dancers, mix tape lovers, house party losers, and we are not cool. We want a place where pleasure, politics and music mingle in one space, where voices of dissent lie over beats, synchronised dance routines and alcoholic drinks. We think musical genres were made to be ripped, cut up, and pasted back in ways that leave us begging for more, from queercore, riot grrrl, punk, rock n roll, electro-pop-queer-beat, to indie-trash-glam-randomness. It’s the sound of the bedroom dancefloor revolution as we play songs that make your heart beat just that little bit faster. We want to create a space free from the intimidating, hipster, leeds-as-next-big-thing, dress coded, soul-sucking, profit-making mediocrity. Hegemony = enemy. They can just go and Suck Our Left One.

We welcome ladies, gentlemen, grrrls and queers of all genders, persuasions, shapes and sizes to dance recklessly without fear of ridicule, twat-titude or evaluation

UPSTAIRS: Le Tigre, Gossip, Controller.Controller, Robots in Disguise, Sleater Kinney, Scream Club, The Slits, Raincoats, Melt Banana, Lesbians On Ecstasy, Ghost Mice, The Organ, The Au Pairs, Erase Errata, Spitboy, The Third Sex, The Butchies, Lunachicks, Ut, Gravy Train!!!!, Scissor Girls, The Grates, Manic Cough, Numbers, Deerhoof, DNA, Dominatrix, The Gits, The Evens, Team Dresch, Spider and the Webs, Kevin Blechdom, Shoplifting, ESG, Theo and the Skyscrapers, Motormark, Bis, P J Harvey, Blondie, Breeders, Kaito, The Runaways, Patti Smith, Babes in Toyland, Mz Sojourn, Aretha Franklin, The Corey O’s, Partyline, 45 Grave, Beehive and the Barracudas, Red Aunts, Discount, Hang on the Box, Help She Can’t Swim, Les Georges Leningrad, Woman, Autolux, Retching Red, LiLiPUT, Juliette and the Licks…

DOWNSTAIRS: Cat Power, Bjork, Arab Strap, Patrick Wolf, Kristin Hersh, Jeff Lewis, Architecture in Helsinki, TV on the Radio, Mary Timony, Herman Dune, Mrs Pilgrimm, Death Cab for Cutie, Lianne Hall, Regina Spektor, Holcombe Waller, Throwing Muses, Nina Nastasia, Magnetic Fields, Amy Ray, Kimya Dawson, Scout Niblett, Aislers Set, Tori Amos, Neutral Milk Hotel, Laura Veirs, Arcade Fire, Lush, the Hangovers, Joanna Newsom, Islands, Aphex Twin, Luscious Jackson, Bic Runga, Plaid, Eels, Phoenix, Julie Ruin, Mercury Rev, Drugstore…

To celebrate and raise awareness of the upcoming Leeds Ladyfest 2007, manifesta, the Leeds-based feminist collective are hosting an all-dayer music event on Saturday July 8th, at The Commonplace (23-25 Wharf Street, Leeds LS2 7EQ) from 4pm till late, with some of the UK’s best female fronted bands; tickets costing £5.

• Wet Dog (London) - All-girl three-piece mustering up minimal, atonal punkpop with a scratchy guitar, trebly bass and drums which pound and shuffle along
• Corey Orbison (Bristol) – pure-heart-stop-start-noise-nik three-piece outfit; injecting hardcore-punk with a healthy sense of wimpiness and fun. smart kids with sharp instruments and tuff-enuff looks
• Sky Larkin (Leeds) - Frequently overwhelming, dark, upbeat, frantic and utterly charming. At the junction where rock and pop meet, with an attitude and forcefulness behind the music which grabs the attention, and leave you wanting more
• Lake Me (Newcastle) – Guitars, drums and vocals conjuring up beautiful tales of the heart
• Drei (Brighton) - Sultry twisted dark jazz-grooves, cello, flute, vocals and drums
• Drunk Granny (Cardiff) - Hyper-electric, riot grrrl duo; full of noise and wit
• Das Wanderlust (Teesside) - 100mph Fisher Price Pop with noisy guitars, bleepy keyboards, fuzz bass, bang/crash drums and shouty girl vocals
• Ruby Tombs (Leeds) - robotic primitive trash, with barbaric jungle drums, creepy thrashpop guitars, and thugish squeeled vocals! Rounded off with horror organ and sci-fi sound effects!
• Dirt Blonde (Liverpool) - Like a punk rock orchid; shockingly beautiful, tragically delicate, and so immediate that if you blink, you’ll miss them

Ladyfest Leeds ( www.myspace.com/ladyfestleeds) will take place in Spring 2007 to celebrate the creative and organisational talents of women in Leeds and Yorkshire through arts and music. It aims to bring together the energy, ideas and experience of individuals, voluntary and community organisations, colleges and universities, and the statutory sector.

It's the sound of the bedroom dancefloor revolution as we play songs that make your heart beat just that little bit faster. We want to create a space free from the intimidating, hipster, leeds-as-next-big-thing, dress coded, soul-sucking, profit-making mediocrity. Hegemony = enemy. They can just go and Suck Our Left One.

We welcome ladies, gentlemen, grrrls and queers of all genders, persuasions, shapes and sizes to dance recklessly without fear of ridicule, twat-titude or evaluation.
expect...Le Tigre, Gossip, Controller.Controller, Robots in Disguise, Sleater Kinney, Scream Club, The Slits, Raincoats, Melt Banana, Lesbians On Ecstasy, The Organ, The Au Pairs, Erase Errata, Spitboy, The Third Sex, The Butchies, Lunachicks, Ut, Gravy Train!!!!, Huggy Bear, Ladyfuzz, Ruby Tombs, Lucid Nation, Mo-dettes, The Noisettes, The Pipettes, Regina Spektor, Scissor Girls, The Grates, Bikini Kill, PGMG, Chicks On Speed, Blood Sausage, Phantom Pregnancies, Manic Cough, The Amps, Wet Dog, Cat Power, Numbers, Ani Difranco, Delta 5, Deerhoof, DNA, Dominatrix, The Gits, Fifth Column, Tribe 8, Team Dresch, Spider and the Webs, Bratmobile, Giant Drag, Kevin Blechdom, X Ray Spex, Bangs, Pussycat Trash, Peaches, Shoplifting, ESG, Throwing Muses, Theo and the Skyscrapers, Hole, Motormark, Bis, P J Harvey, Blondie, Breeders, Kenickie, Elastica, Kaito, The Runaways, Patti Smith, Babes in Toyland, Mz Sojourn, Mary Timony, Tegan and Sara, Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin, The Corey O's, Partyline, 45 Grave, Beehive and the Barracudas, Red Aunts, Discount, Hang on the Box, Help She Can't Swim, Les Georges Leningrad, Woman, Tracy and the Plastics, Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her, Red Monkey, Michael Dracula, Sonic Youth, Julie Ruin, Be Your Own PET!, The Cramps, Garbage, Rainer Maria, The Soviettes, Electrelane, The Pandoras, Cibo Matto, The Donnas, Essential Logic, The Muffs, Nina Simone, Autolux, Retching Red, LiLiPUT, Juliette and the Licks, April March, Dangerous Birds, Mirah, Hooker, L7, Anna Oxygen, Scissor Girls, ... and many more

sorry to re-post but... regarding ATPP this weekend at the brudenell.

we have no tickets left for tomorrow (lightning bolt show).
nobody can pay on the door.
there are no guest list places left.

so please don't hassle whoever is on the door.
if you need a ticket, posting on cops and robbers or on leeds music scene seems to have yielded results.

aside from issues of fire safety and getting served at the bar, we have a limited number of wristbands so we can't oversell the venue anyway. we are REALLY REALLY sorry - especially for bands with annoyed friends.

again...

today's gig will be a belter. we have about 80 tickets left. come down early to ake sure you get in, and to see that frickin tank, the warm, jean genet and grabba grabba tape. doors are at 7.

Killing Fantasy on THURSDAY! [24 Apr 2006|10:25am]

deathlessspell
This month Killing Fantasy presents five amazing female DJs, loads of records and quite a lot of rum. With this in mind, she predicts a riot or at least some synchronised dance routines! Guest DJs include Leonie Cooper who is, in fact, a superwoman. She writes for the NME, numerous other publications and edits Revolution, a magazine that celebrates women in music. In addition to these fancy feats, shes also a DJ who has proven to be a regular fixture on the London clubbing scene. Joining Leonie is Julia of the Leeds-based collective, Manifesta. Julia DJs and promotes gigs all over Leeds and as if that wasn't enough, she also has her own band and is working on a PhD. Oh, my! Of course, Killing Fantasy regulars Vic, Beck and Sarah will be there spilling booze down their nice party frocks and falling over. They are really looking forward to this dance-off and hope to see you there!

Killing Fantasy is at the Retro Bar on Sackville Street in Manchester from 10-2 and its £3 in.

Killing Fantasy on Thursday [28 Mar 2006|12:24pm]

deathlessspell
Last time Killing Fantasy hosted a Burlesque night there was free cigars, French maids and fancy dresses galore! However, this time she's doing it again and is proud to announce a special appearance from Lady Luck's Burlesque Beauties! The ladies, who are fast building up a reputation as one of the most superb burlesque acts in the area, will be prancing around looking beautiful and treating us to one of their spectacular live shows.

And that's not all! Killing Fantasy DJs will be, as ever, spinning their favourite Rock n Roll, Riot Grrrl, Punk, New Wave, Electro and pop records for your aural delight and there will be free sweeties and surprises from the pound shop for those in the most suitable burlesque attire.

Killing Fantasy hits Retro Bar, Sackville Street, Manchester on Thursday March 30th from 10pm. Entry is £3.

FRIDAY 7TH APRIL
BRUDENELL SOCIAL CLUB, LEEDS

DATA PANIK, MICHAEL J COXX

DATA PANIK were formed from the ashes of bis last year. Amanda, Steven and John are now joined by bass player Stuart (ex-MULTIPLIES) and drummer Graham. (John also plays in THE AMPHETAMEANIES replacing ALEX from Franz Ferdinand). BIS were responsible for inspiring post-riot grrrl teenagers to make fanzines and get involved in the late 90s diy scene. Data Panik’s sound is slick pop music with hard dance beats and electro-pop tinges. They’re inspired more than ever by electronic/punk crossover bands such as DEVO and POLYSICS (who they also supported). Listen to the amazing song ‘Minimum Wage’ at http://www.myspace.com/datapanik.

MICHAEL J COXX (www.michaeljcoxx.com)
If Gravy Train!!!! were from Sheffield they’d probably rap in thick Yorkshire accents about STDs. Cos that’s what Michael J Coxx does. Observe Myspace for our favourite song, ‘The Clap’, and the video for ‘New Kidz’. For fans of Hawnay Troof, Jean Genet and fun electro. Rescheduled from March 6th when he was defeated by SNOW!!

+ guests, + Partyparty djs
